What is JEE Main?

JEE Main is a national-level engineering entrance exam conducted by National Testing Agency for admission into NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutes. It also serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced is the second stage of the IIT entrance process conducted by one of the IITs under the guidance of the Indian Institutes of Technology for admission into IITs.
  • JEE Main: Easier level, multiple colleges, qualifying exam for Advanced

  • JEE Advanced: More difficult, only for top JEE Main qualifiers, admission to IITs

JEE Advanced is conducted by different IITs every year on a rotational basis.
Students who have passed or are appearing in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are eligible.
Only the top 2.5 lakh rank holders of JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced (criteria may vary slightly each year).
Students can attempt JEE Main for three consecutive years, with two sessions per year.
A student can attempt JEE Advanced two times in two consecutive years.
What is the exam pattern of JEE Main?

JEE Main consists of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with objective-type questions (MCQs and numerical-based).

JEE Advanced includes multiple question types such as MCQs, numerical value questions, and matrix match, with varying marking schemes.
Yes, both JEE Main and JEE Advanced have negative marking for certain questions.
Ideally, students should start preparation from Class 11 for better conceptual clarity and practice.
